Kedarnath Dham Yatra Temporarily Halted Due to Landslide Debris in Sonprayag’s Munkatia Zone

Rudraprayag | July 3, 2025 : The Kedarnath Dham Yatra has been temporarily suspended due to a landslide and falling debris at the Munkatia Sliding Zone in the Sonprayag area of Uttarakhand. The Rudraprayag police confirmed the suspension on Thursday via an official post on social media platform 'X', stating that the pilgrimage will resume once the debris is cleared and the road is deemed safe.“The road is blocked due to debris and stones falling in the Munkatia Sliding Zone under the Sonprayag area. The Kedarnath Dham Yatra has been temporarily halted for now. The Yatra will resume once the road is cleared,” the post read.

This development comes amid the ongoing Char Dham Yatra, one of Hinduism’s holiest pilgrimages that includes visits to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. The Kedarnath Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is situated at an elevation of over 11,000 feet in the Himalayas and is revered by millions of devotees.

Despite the challenging terrain and weather conditions, the 2025 Kedarnath Yatra has seen an unprecedented number of pilgrims, attributed to enhanced infrastructure, improved roads, helicopter services, and upgraded accommodation facilities. Authorities have also deployed additional security and medical teams to support the influx and ensure safety in the high-altitude region.

The temple gates were opened for the 2025 season on May 2, with thousands of devotees undertaking the sacred journey since then.

The Uttarakhand government, in recent years, has made significant efforts to make the Char Dham Yatra more accessible and safer. However, the Himalayan terrain remains prone to natural disruptions, especially during the monsoon season, with landslides and falling rocks posing frequent threats.

Officials are actively working to clear the debris and restore safe passage for pilgrims. Updates on the resumption of the yatra are expected soon from local authorities.
