CBI Probes RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata Rape and Murder Case

Kolkata: On Thursday, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) visited the Police Morgue of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata as part of their ongoing investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at the institution. This visit follows the conclusion of a second round of polygraph tests on Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital (RGKMCH). The tests were conducted by a team from the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL). The CBI has also administered a polygraph test to Sanjay Roy, the arrested suspect in the case.
In response to the investigation, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) suspended Dr. Sandip Ghosh's membership on Wednesday. This suspension came amid a CBI probe into the alleged rape and murder of the trainee doctor. The IMA’s decision was influenced by the committee’s review of the case, including the grievance of the victim's parents who reportedly faced difficulties in meeting the institution's head and were troubled by the initial reports suggesting their daughter had committed suicide.
Additionally, the anti-corruption branch of the CBI conducted searches at multiple locations linked to Dr. Sandip Ghosh and his relatives in Kolkata on August 25. The CBI filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Dr. Ghosh on August 24 following directives from the Calcutta High Court. This investigation was prompted by the High Court's order to examine alleged corruption at the medical college.
IMA National President Dr. RV Asokan commented on the suspension, stating, "The IMA headquarters has suspended the membership of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, former Principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital and vice president of the Calcutta IMA branch. The disciplinary committee considered the grievances expressed by the victim's parents, who were dismayed by the handling of the case and the initial information that suggested their daughter had taken her own life."
The tragic death of the trainee doctor was discovered on August 9 in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
