Malad Locals Stall Dharavi Rehabilitation Survey, Demand Dialogue

Aksa Village, Malad, Mumbai: A land survey in Aksa Village, Malad, meant to identify areas for Dharavi's rehabilitation under the redevelopment project, was abruptly called off after fierce opposition from local residents. The protestors cited violations of a high court order mandating prior consultation with affected residents.
Ajit Thakur, secretary of Mukteshwar Society, expressed outrage, stating, “The high court order clearly directs officials to consult us before any action, yet they arrived unannounced.” A copy of the court order was shown to the media as evidence of non-compliance.
Tensions escalated as survey officials, accompanied by local police and riot control personnel, began their work early Thursday morning. Barricades were set up, but residents swiftly mobilized, demanding the survey's termination. A protester added, “Our homes and livelihoods are at stake. We do not agree to Dharavi being brought to Malad.”
Local MLA Aslam Sheikh intervened, urging officials to stop the survey and delete collected data. The day ended with a delegation of locals meeting the Mumbai Suburban District Collector, Rajendra Kshirsagar, who assured them their concerns would be addressed, although the final decision rests beyond his authority.
The incident highlights mounting resistance to redevelopment initiatives that bypass public consultation.
