BMC's J J Flyover Beautification Sparks Controversy

J J Flyover, Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to complete the beautification of the median under the J J Flyover (Qutb-e-Konkan Makhdoom Ali Mahimi Flyover) within the next two months. The project includes planting noise-reducing trees and converting three old BEST double-decker buses into art galleries, cafeterias, and libraries beneath the flyover, with a budget of Rs 12 crore.

Civic Chief Bhushan Gagrani recently inspected the work, which aims to enhance the 2.1 km-long road divider with trees and protective railings to deter misuse and vandalism. Gagrani emphasized that NGOs or women’s self-help groups would manage the facilities under the flyover.

However, the project has faced criticism from transport expert Kamlakar Shenoy, who filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) claiming the beautification is illegal. Shenoy argues that BMC's expansion of the median on a congested road amounts to encroachment and further traffic congestion. The Bombay High Court will soon hear his case.
