Rats Gnaw on Suicide Victim's Body in Mumbai Hospital, Family Left Traumatized

Mumbai: A shocking incident unfolded at Kandivali's civic-run Shatabdi Hospital, where rats were found gnawing on the body of 38-year-old Sachin Madan Kakre, who died by suicide on Sunday. The incident, which has left the victim's family deeply distressed, highlights severe negligence in the hospital’s handling of the deceased’s body.
Sachin, a daily wage laborer from Dahisar East, was found hanging from his hut by his mother, Tulsa, around 10:30 pm on Sunday. The family rushed the body to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead by 11:30 pm. After the police conducted the panchanama, the body was left at Shatabdi Hospital until post-mortem arrangements were made at Bhagwati Hospital.
However, when the family returned around 10 am the next day, they were horrified to find the body had been severely bitten by rats. The nose, forehead, and private parts were damaged, and even the police officers were taken aback by the condition of the body.
Hospital authorities admitted to the lapse, with Senior Doctor Ajay Gupta explaining that the room where the body was kept is usually used by police for the panchanama process, and rats had managed to enter despite partitions. The hospital has reportedly repaired the room.
The Kakre family has called for improvements in the hospital's handling procedures to ensure such incidents never occur again.
