Marathi Made Mandatory in Maharashtra’s Government Offices: Strict Enforcement Begins

Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has issued a Government Resolution (GR) making the use of Marathi mandatory in all government, semi-government, and state-aided offices. Employees in these offices must communicate in Marathi with visitors, except for those from outside the state or country.

The resolution, issued by the state planning department, is part of the state's Marathi language policy implementation. It mandates that original proposals, correspondence, orders, messages, and even office presentations and websites be in Marathi. Additionally, all name boards, application forms, and signages in Central government offices and banks operating in Maharashtra must also be in Marathi.

Strict enforcement measures have been outlined, allowing citizens to file complaints against officials who do not comply. Disciplinary action will be taken against violators upon verification. Marathi is also now compulsory in advertisements by government-sanctioned enterprises.

This move comes after Marathi was granted classical language status by the Centre in October last year, along with Pali, Prakrit, Assamese, and Bengali.
