Massive Accident on Old Versova Bridge: Tanker Plunges into Creek, Driver Dead

Mumbai, June 23 : A major accident occurred today around 11:30 AM on the old Versova Bridge located on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway near Ghodbunder, resulting in the tragic death of a tanker driver.

According to initial reports, the tanker was en route from Vasai to Thane when it crashed into a trailer loaded with timber moving ahead in the Mumbai-bound lane. The impact of the collision caused the tanker driver to lose control. In an attempt to steer the vehicle away, the driver swerved, but the vehicle broke through the iron railings of the bridge and plunged straight into the creek below.

Rescue operations began immediately after the incident. Police, fire brigade, and emergency rescue teams arrived promptly at the scene. Efforts to lift the tanker from the water using cranes are ongoing. However, due to the tanker being completely submerged, the authorities are facing significant challenges. Unfortunately, the driver died on the spot in the accident.

The incident led to temporary traffic congestion in the Ghodbunder area, adding to the ongoing issues on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway. For the past several days, the highway has been witnessing heavy traffic jams, primarily due to ongoing flyover construction work and poor traffic management. On Monday, long queues of vehicles were seen from Chillar Phata to Khanivade. Inadequate planning by the highway administration has reportedly forced some vehicles to move in the wrong direction, further worsening the situation.
