Massive Earthquake in Myanmar, Thailand: Over 1,000 Dead, India Launches ‘Operation Brahma’

Myanmar,Thailand,India,Bangladesh,China: A devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, killing over 1,000 people and injuring more than 2,376, with fears that the toll could surpass 10,000, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The tremors were felt in Thailand, India (Meghalaya, Manipur), Bangladesh (Dhaka, Chattogram), and China.

Rescue Efforts & Global Response:

  • India launched ‘Operation Brahma’, delivering 15 tonnes of relief material via an IAF C-130J aircraft.

  • Myanmar’s junta chief Min Aung Hlaing appealed for international aid, leading to China and Russia sending rescue teams.

  • Bangkok declared a state of emergency, with 2,000 reports of structural damage and 100 workers missing after a skyscraper collapse.

Meanwhile, USAID assistance has been delayed due to budget cuts, though the US government has promised support. Myanmar continues to struggle with power and water shortages following the disaster.

Experts warn that Myanmar remains highly vulnerable due to its location on the Sagaing fault line, known for past deadly quakes.
