MMRDA Announces Elevated Road Project on Eastern Express Highway to Alleviate Thane Traffic Congestion

Thane: The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has unveiled plans to build an elevated road along the Eastern Express Highway to alleviate the traffic woes in Thane. The ambitious project will span 8.24 kilometers, stretching from Anand Nagar to Saket, and aims to reduce congestion by offering a dedicated route for vehicles bypassing the city.

The six-lane corridor, with three lanes in each direction, will provide a smoother alternative for commuters traveling through Thane, without the need to enter the city. The project is expected to improve local traffic flow, reduce travel time, and enhance road safety.

“This elevated road will begin at Anand Nagar, within the limits of Mumbai, and extend up to the Kharegaon Toll Naka. The estimated cost of the project is Rs 2,188.62 crore, with a timeline of 48 months for completion, which includes a 24-month defect liability period,” shared a senior official from MMRDA.

The authorities are currently conducting a tree survey to evaluate the environmental impact of the project, particularly the number of trees that may be affected. However, most of the project does not require environmental clearance, except for a 120-meter-long stretch of the Kalwa Bridge, for which the approval process is ongoing.

The elevated road is expected to provide significant relief to Thane’s traffic, especially for vehicles that typically pass through the city. With reduced congestion and improved traffic management, the project is seen as a major step towards enhancing urban mobility in the region.

While the MMRDA works to balance the project’s environmental considerations, officials remain optimistic about its ability to address the growing traffic demands and improve the overall commuting experience for Thane residents.

The elevated road, once completed, will be a vital infrastructure project aimed at modernizing the region’s transport network and facilitating smoother transit between key points in Thane and Mumbai.
