Mumbai Cops Suspended After Video of Extorting Shopkeepers Goes Viral

Reay Road-Darukhana, Sewri, Mumbai: Two constables from Sewri police station, Vasudev Sudamrao Damaale and Deepak Suresh Navale, faced suspension on December 30, 2024, after being caught on camera extorting money from shopkeepers during patrolling duty in the Reay Road-Darukhana area.
Locals recorded videos showing the constables collecting money via children while patrolling in a police vehicle and uniform. The footage went viral on social media, prompting one user to tag the Mumbai police commissioner.
Following the viral post, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Port Zone) Dr. Sudhakar Pathare ordered an immediate investigation. Senior officers conducted a preliminary inquiry, and a report by the Sewri police station confirmed the misconduct. Acting swiftly, DCP Pathare suspended the constables and initiated a departmental inquiry.
“This indiscipline tarnishes the police force’s reputation, and we have taken strict action to send a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated,” said DCP Pathare.
This decisive response aims to reinforce accountability and uphold public trust in the force.
