Mumbai, December 4: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a high tide alert for Thursday night, warning citizens to stay away from the city’s seafront as waves are expected to rise up to 4.96 metres at 11.52 pm. The alert comes ahead of Dr B.R. Ambedkar’s death anniversary on December 6, a day when thousands of followers gather at Chaitya Bhoomi in Dadar to pay their respects, prompting the civic body to step up safety preparations along the coastline.
According to BMC officials, high tide conditions are expected from December 4 to 7, with waves crossing four metres during this period. The administration has urged people, especially those living in low-lying and coastal areas, to be extremely cautious and avoid venturing near the sea. Lifeguards and local authorities have also been instructed to strictly enforce safety protocols.
In light of the heavy crowd expected at Chaitya Bhoomi and Shivaji Park on December 6, BMC has appealed to visitors to maintain a safe distance from the seashore. The area witnesses large gatherings every year as people pay homage to Dr Ambedkar, whose last rites were performed at Chaitya Bhoomi in 1956.
To prevent any untoward incidents, the civic body has deployed additional personnel and installed barricades and warning signage at vulnerable spots along Mumbai’s coastline. Disaster management teams and local police are on heightened alert to ensure effective crowd control and swift response to emergencies.
Despite the high tide warning, Mumbai’s weather is expected to remain stable over the next few days. The city will experience clear skies, dry conditions and a pleasant temperature range of 33–34°C during the day and 19–20°C at night. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has not issued any rainfall or severe weather warnings. Mumbaikars can expect a sunny and calm week between December 4 and 9.
