Mumbai News: BMC Launches New Dry Waste Center in Andheri to Ease Pressure on Dumping Grounds

Mumbai, May 16: In a major push toward improving solid waste management, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced the expansion of dry waste segregation centers across the city. As part of this initiative, a new dry waste segregation and processing center has been inaugurated on Mahakali Caves Road in Andheri, aiming to reduce the growing burden on Mumbai's dumping grounds.

Currently, 46 such centers are operational across the city. The newly launched Andheri center, developed under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, will scientifically process 10 metric tons of dry waste every day.

Most of the waste collected from various parts of Mumbai is transported to the Kanjurmarg landfill, with about 10% going to the Deonar dumping ground. This has led to increased pressure on both facilities.

“To address this issue, a new dry waste segregation and processing center has been launched on Mahakali Caves Road in Andheri. The center has been developed in collaboration with Hindustan Unilever, Xin Tiyo, and Dalmia Polypro Ltd under a PPP model,” said Vishwas Mote, Deputy Municipal Commissioner (Zone 3).

The BMC is now focusing on decentralizing dry waste collection and processing to ensure more efficient waste management. These centers enable the conversion of waste into reusable and eco-friendly products, contributing to environmental sustainability.

Efforts are also being made to increase the number of such centers across Mumbai and to modernize existing facilities. Additionally, the fleet of dry waste collection vehicles will be expanded. At present, each ward in the city has only one vehicle dedicated to collecting dry waste.

This latest step is expected to significantly improve Mumbai’s waste management system while reducing the dependency on overburdened dumping grounds, contributing to a cleaner and greener city.
