Mumbai Rains: Heavy Showers Lash City, Andheri Subway Closed, Orange Alert Issued by IMD

Mumbai, July 25, 2025 : Mumbai and its surrounding regions continued to reel under intense monsoon activity on Thursday and early Friday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue an orange alert for Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane. Palghar district remains under a yellow alert, as widespread moderate to heavy rainfall is forecasted to continue along the Konkan coast.

Overnight rains intensified in areas such as CSMT, Byculla, Kurla, and Mulund, leading to waterlogging and slowing traffic movement. The Andheri subway was shut for vehicular traffic due to water accumulation of up to 1.5 feet. Commuters are being diverted via Gokhale Bridge and Thackeray Bridge, as per a statement from Mumbai Traffic Police.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) warned of more intense spells in the coming hours and has urged residents to step out only if necessary. The BMC Disaster Management Department is monitoring vulnerable locations and coordinating emergency responses.

The IMD’s nowcast warning issued at 7:20 am predicts moderate rain in Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar over the next few hours. Citizens have been advised to remain cautious and plan travel accordingly. According to meteorologists, extremely heavy rainfall is possible in isolated areas, especially in low-lying zones.

  • Maximum temperature: ~30°C

  • Minimum temperature: ~23°C

  • Winds: 20–30 km/h, with gusts along the coast

  • High tide: Expected in the late afternoon (approx. 4.5 meters), which may worsen waterlogging

Mumbai’s lifeline — its suburban train network — continues to operate on all lines with minor delays, according to real-time updates from commuter app m-Indicator. However, waterlogging at key junctions may impact services if rainfall intensifies.

At the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, minor flight delays were reported. IndiGo Airlines issued a travel advisory, alerting passengers to possible delays in Mumbai and Kolkata due to severe weather. Passengers are urged to check their flight status and allow extra travel time to the airport.

The Mumbai Police issued a public advisory urging people to stay indoors, avoid coastal areas, and drive cautiously. “Our teams are on high alert to assist citizens. For emergencies, dial 100 / 112 / 103,” read a post from their official handle.

In Navi Mumbai, areas such as Vashi, Nerul, Koparkhairane, and Ghansoli witnessed light to moderate showers, with the likelihood of heavier spells later in the day. Thane, along with Kalyan, Dombivli, and Bhiwandi, is also bracing for increased rainfall.

In Palghar, moderate rains continued across Vasai, Dahanu, Talasari, Jawhar, and Boisar. Authorities are monitoring riverbanks and rural areas for possible waterlogging and overflow from local nullahs.

Civic and weather authorities continue to appeal to the public to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary movement, and stay informed through official channels. With more rain expected, Mumbaikars are advised to follow live updates, carry rain gear, and avoid flood-prone zones.
