Mumbai Reports First GBS Case of 2025; BMC on High Alert

Mumbai, Maharashtra: Mumbai has recorded its first case of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) in 2025, with a 64-year-old woman from Andheri West currently receiving treatment at SevenHills Hospital. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has assured citizens of its preparedness, following a series of cases recently reported in Pune.

Case Details & Medical Response

The patient, a resident of Malpa Dongri, was admitted on January 21 after experiencing fever, diarrhoea, and progressive muscle weakness. Doctors confirmed GBS after conducting tests, including a spinal tap and nerve conduction studies. She is now stable and undergoing plasma therapy.

BMC has allocated 60 ICU beds across Mumbai’s major hospitals and an additional 100 at SevenHills Hospital if needed. Private and government hospitals have been instructed to report new cases immediately.

Understanding GBS

GBS is an autoimmune disorder that leads to muscle weakness and paralysis, often triggered by viral or bacterial infections, vaccinations, or surgery. While not contagious, early detection and treatment are crucial.

Precautions & Public Advisory

Health officials recommend:
✅ Drinking boiled water and eating hygienic food
✅ Maintaining personal hygiene
✅ Seeking immediate medical help for sudden weakness in limbs

BMC urges residents to visit civic hospitals if they experience symptoms. Physiotherapy plays a key role in recovery, and while there is no cure, timely intervention can improve outcomes.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation, ensuring Mumbai’s healthcare system is equipped to handle any additional cases.
