Mumbai to Reconsider Plastic Ban Fines to Ensure Better Enforcement

Mumbai: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is considering reducing fines for single-use plastic violations to strengthen the enforcement of its plastic ban. This decision comes after the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) urged the civic body to intensify efforts to tackle plastic waste in the city.

Currently, violators face escalating fines: Rs 5,000 for the first offence, Rs 10,000 for a second offence, and fines up to Rs 25,000 or imprisonment for repeat offences. However, BMC officials have pointed out that these high penalties may be hindering effective implementation.

Siddesh Kadam, Chairman of the MPCB, highlighted that while the production of plastic is banned in Maharashtra, products continue to flood the market, largely due to imports from neighbouring states without similar bans. He emphasized the need for stricter action against the illegal plastic trade.

The BMC is now revising the fine structure, with a draft proposal for lower penalties aimed at easing the burden on the public while still ensuring the effectiveness of the ban. Once reviewed by the civic chief, the proposal will require approval from the state government before implementation.
