Mumbai’s Robotic Parking in Limbo: BMC Set to Appoint New Contractor

Breach Candy, Mumbai: Mumbai's pioneering robotic car parking facility, located at Breach Candy on Bhulabhai Desai Road, will soon be operational again following a month-long shutdown due to a dispute with the previous contractor. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is set to issue a new tender to hire a contractor to manage and maintain the city’s first mechanized parking system, which was inaugurated in 2021.
The 21-storey facility, capable of parking 240 vehicles, utilizes robotic arms to lift and park cars on multiple floors, providing an innovative solution to Mumbai’s crowded streets and space shortage. The facility became immensely popular, especially during weekends, but faced an operational setback in November after one of the robotic arms malfunctioned and multiple leaks were discovered in the building.
Despite these issues, BMC remains optimistic about reviving the service, and a new contract will be floated by January. The facility is expected to reopen in the first quarter of next year, with repairs underway.
Previously, BMC charged Rs 4,400 for monthly passes, and the hourly rate was Rs 70, with a surcharge for long-term parking.
