Navy and MMRDA Join Forces: Naval Engineers to Study Mumbai’s Mega Projects

Mumbai, June 16: In a significant step towards inter-agency collaboration and knowledge-sharing, Vice Admiral Deepak Kumar Goswami, Director General of Naval Projects (DGNP), paid a courtesy visit to Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner of Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). The meeting underlined the growing synergy between India’s civil and defense infrastructure sectors.
Impressed by the scale, technical complexity, and vision behind MMRDA’s ongoing infrastructure projects, Vice Admiral Goswami expressed interest in allowing naval engineers to study these civil projects to broaden their knowledge and perspective.
Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee welcomed the proposal, highlighting the importance of cross-disciplinary learning.“Exchange of knowledge across different sectors strengthens the foundation of nation-building,” he said.
The MMRDA, under Dr. Mukherjee’s leadership, is spearheading transformative projects across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), including:
-
337 km of metro rail network under construction – one of the largest in Asia
-
200+ km of road corridor projects improving citywide connectivity
-
The iconic ‘Shunya Bridge’, a structural engineering marvel
-
Rehabilitation of over 16,000 families through Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) initiatives
-
Atal Setu, a strategic bridge enhancing inter-regional transport
-
Urban planning across 6,000+ sq. km, ensuring sustainable and future-ready growth
This new partnership opens avenues for naval engineers to explore urban infrastructure complexities such as metro rail systems, elevated bridges, and smart urban planning. It also reflects a growing effort to ensure India’s defense and civil institutions collaborate on technical innovations and best practices.“When visionary leadership and engineering expertise come together, India marches ahead stronger and smarter,” remarked an MMRDA spokesperson.
This move is expected to foster innovation, enhance project efficiency, and contribute significantly to India's broader infrastructure and defense synergy.
