Parents Allege Cover-Up in RG Kar Medic's Death, Question CM’s Accountability

Kolkata: The parents of the R G Kar Medical College victim have accused police, hospital authorities, and representatives of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of attempting to destroy evidence in the alleged rape and murder of their 31-year-old daughter. They also claimed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who holds the police and health portfolios, cannot disown responsibility for these failures.
The victim's semi-naked body was discovered on August 9, 2023, in the seminar hall of the medical college. While Sanjay Roy was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by the trial court on January 20, her parents allege that the larger conspiracy remains concealed, and the Kolkata Police failed to seal the crime scene, allowing evidence tampering.
“Only one of the 68 individuals identified from the area’s footage was charged,” the victim’s mother said, questioning the thoroughness of the investigation. She further alleged a lack of action by both the state administration and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in addressing suppressed facts and shielding key conspirators.
Trinamool Congress spokesperson Kunal Ghosh dismissed the allegations as politically motivated, emphasizing the CM’s swift actions, including directing the Kolkata Police to wrap up the case. "The CM ordered a CBI probe as per the High Court's directive. Recent state investigations have successfully secured convictions in other cases,” Ghosh stated.
The case continues to spotlight alleged systemic lapses and political conflicts in West Bengal's governance.
