Ropeway Protest in Katra: Clashes Erupt as Locals Demand Project Cancellation

Katra, Reasi District, Jammu & Kashmir: Tensions flared in Katra on Thursday as protesters clashed with police during a demonstration against the proposed ropeway project. The protest, which followed a 72-hour shutdown called by Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Sangarsh Samiti, saw protesters on hunger strike demanding the release of those detained the previous day.
The Samiti, representing local businesses such as shopkeepers, pony operators, and palanquin owners, claims that the R250-crore ropeway project threatens their livelihoods. The project, aimed at assisting senior citizens, children, and others with mobility challenges, will connect Tarakote Marg to Sanji Chhat, providing easier access to the Vaishno Devi cave shrine.
While the government and Shrine Board emphasize the benefits of the project, protesters argue that it will harm the pilgrimage-driven economy of Katra. “The bandh will continue until the government shelves the ropeway project,” said a Samiti spokesperson.
