Post Offices Go Digital: UPI-Based Payment System to Be Rolled Out Nationwide by August 2025

New Delhi, June 28: In a major step towards digital inclusion, post offices across India will begin accepting digital payments at their counters starting August 2025. This initiative follows the completion of a new IT application rollout by the Department of Posts, designed to enable Unified Payments Interface (UPI)-based transactions via dynamic QR codes.

Until now, post offices have been unable to accept digital payments due to the lack of integration with the UPI system. This has posed challenges for customers seeking cashless payment options for postal services. However, the upcoming IT upgrade under the Department’s “IT 2.0” initiative is set to change that.

“The Department of Posts is revamping its IT infrastructure with new applications that will support transactions using dynamic QR codes,” an official source told PTI. The system is expected to go live across all post offices in the country by August 2025.

The pilot rollout has already been initiated in the Karnataka circle, where dynamic QR-based booking of mail products was successfully tested at Mysore Head Office, Bagalkot Head Office, and various subordinate branches.

Initially, post offices had implemented a static QR code system at their counters, but recurring technical issues and a rise in customer complaints led to its discontinuation. The new dynamic system promises a smoother and more secure transaction experience.

This digital leap aligns with India’s broader push towards financial digitization and improved public service delivery. Once fully implemented, the system is expected to enhance customer convenience and modernize the postal payment experience across rural and urban centers alike.
