Rahul Gandhi Slams Delhi Police for Detaining Climate Activist and Elderly Citizens at Singhu Border

New Delhi:The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Tuesday criticised the Delhi Police's detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and his supporters at the Singhu border, describing it as "unacceptable."

He questioned why elderly citizens and Army veterans were being detained for peacefully marching for environmental and constitutional rights. The responsibility for this action was placed on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with Gandhi stating that the 'Chakravyuh' will be broken and Ladakh's voice will be heard.

Wangchuk and his supporters were detained by Delhi Police on late Monday night, while marching from Leh to New Delhi to urge the government to resume dialogue with Ladakh's leadership regarding their demands. This includes their demand for Ladakh to be included in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, granting them law-making powers to protect their land and cultural identity.

Wangchuk has been advocating for statehood for Ladakh for five years, and he emphasised this mission's purpose during the march. The detention of peaceful protesters, especially elderly citizens and Army veterans, is a violation of democracy and their fundamental rights, making it unacceptable.
