Tensions Soar in Pigeon Feeding Row as Marathi Activists Detained in Dadar

Mumbai, August 13 : The ongoing controversy over the closure of kabutar khanas in Mumbai intensified on Wednesday as members of the Marathi Ekikaran Samiti were detained by police while protesting at the Dadar Kabutar Khana, demanding enforcement of the ban on pigeon feeding due to health hazards.

The protesting members were taken to the Dadar Police Station, where they questioned the police’s selective action
Where were the police when members of the Jain community protested on August 6? Why wasn’t action taken against them?” one of the detained members asked.

The incident marks a sharp escalation in what began as a social and health concern but has now turned into a political flashpoint.

While members of the Jain community and BJP MLAs have been actively pushing for the reopening of kabutar khanas, citing religious and cultural significance, Marathi leaders have taken a firm stand in support of the closure, citing public health concerns, especially respiratory issues caused by pigeon droppings in densely populated urban areas.

Pramod Parte, leader of the Marathi Ekikaran Samiti, criticized the state’s handling of the situation, saying,This law and order issue is the Home Minister’s responsibility. Why wasn’t a police force deployed on August 6, when Jain community members tore down the tarpaulin and fed pigeons, violating directives from the State Government, BMC, and the High Court?”

The case regarding the legality and enforcement of the kabutar khana closures is scheduled to be heard in the Bombay High Court later this afternoon. The outcome may shape future regulations around animal feeding practices in public spaces and the balance between religious freedom and public health.
