Title: Political Leaders Slam BJP's Response to Manipur Crisis Amid Continued Violence
As Manipur continues to grapple with escalating violence, political leaders from various parties have sharply criticised the BJP-led central government for its lack of action and response to the ongoing crisis. Despite protests and renewed violence in the northeastern state, Prime Minister Narendra Modi remains silent, with some leaders questioning his priorities as he embarks on international tours while the situation worsens.
On Monday, fresh violence erupted after six individuals went missing from a camp for displaced persons in Jiribam, triggering protests and clashes. The unrest has claimed multiple lives, including that of a protester shot by security forces. The violence follows the deadly aftermath of a gunfight between armed men and security forces last week, which left 10 Kuki youths dead.
Manipur Congress President Keisham Meghachandra criticised the failure of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh's administration, stating that the violence, including attacks on BJP ministers and Congress offices, is a result of government inaction. He also condemned the Prime Minister's silence, noting his ongoing foreign tour amid the turmoil.
Congress leaders, including Gaurav Gogoi, expressed frustration at the lack of decisive action from the Modi government. Gogoi emphasised that despite numerous security reviews by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the situation remains volatile, questioning why the government continues to ignore the state's needs. Former BJP leader Subramanian Swamy also weighed in, questioning the Prime Minister's priorities, comparing his visits to foreign countries over a visit to Manipur.
Trinamul Congress leaders, including Mahua Moitra and Sagarika Ghose, echoed similar sentiments, accusing the government of indifference to the crisis. Ghose criticised Modi for focusing on domestic propaganda instead of addressing the dire situation in Manipur, calling for accountability in Parliament.
In response, Kerala's Congress has called for the imposition of President's Rule in Manipur, urging the Indian Army to take control and restore peace. CPM leader Thomas Issac also attributed the crisis to BJP's failed social engineering strategy and called for the dismissal of the current government.
The political uproar underscores the growing frustration over the government's handling of the Manipur crisis, with leaders from across the spectrum demanding urgent action and accountability.
