Two Separate Mishaps Involving BEST Buses Cause Traffic Disruptions in Mumbai

Mumbai, June 17, 2025 : In two separate incidents within 24 hours, BEST buses were involved in mishaps across Mumbai, leading to injuries and traffic congestion during peak hours.

In the first incident, a Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) bus collided with a pickup truck early Tuesday morning in Goregaon’s Aarey Colony, leaving several passengers with minor injuries. The accident occurred during peak traffic hours, severely impacting traffic flow on the busy Aarey Colony Road.

Local police reported that emergency services were quickly alerted. First responders rushed to the scene, provided medical aid to the injured, and worked to restore order. Officials from Aarey Police Station are currently investigating the cause of the collision. Preliminary findings suggest the crash caused significant delays for daily commuters in the surrounding areas.

In a separate mishap on Monday morning, another BEST bus encountered a road cave-in near Thakurdwar signal, close to the under-construction Metro Line 3 site at Girgaon Metro Station. The incident occurred around 9:30 am, when the rear left tyre of a bus on Route No. 121 (Backbay Depot to J. Mehta Marg) sank into a cavity formed due to sudden ground subsidence.

Authorities suspect the cave-in was caused by water ingress from an adjacent construction site meant for a rehabilitation building under the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) Metro 3 project.

BEST officials acted swiftly, dispatching a crane and towing van to the spot. By 10:45 am, the bus was removed and taken to the depot. A preliminary inspection revealed only a minor dent, and the vehicle was deemed fit for service.

Though no injuries were reported in the Thakurdwar incident, traffic had to be temporarily rerouted. In the 'Up' direction, vehicles were diverted from Kalaniketan through alternate routes, while in the 'Down' direction, buses were redirected via Charushila Gupta Chowk along M.K. Road.

Both incidents have raised concerns about road infrastructure and traffic safety, especially in high-density areas with ongoing construction. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and urge commuters to remain cautious while traveling during peak hours.
