Udaipur Farmer Sentenced for Opium Possession in Mumbai

Goregaon, Mumbai: A 47-year-old farmer from Udaipur has been sentenced to three years in prison by a special NDPS court for possession of 293 grams of opium. The court also imposed a fine of ₹50,000, taking into account the farmer’s health condition as an HIV patient.

The farmer was apprehended at the Goregaon bus depot on August 11, 2011. Despite the serious charges, the court granted the minimum sentence, showing leniency due to his medical condition.

This verdict highlights the stringent legal measures against narcotics, even as the justice system considers the personal circumstances of the accused.
