Veteran Actor Manoj Kumar, India’s Original ‘Bharat Kumar’, Passes Away at 87

Mumbai: Veteran actor Manoj Kumar, fondly known as India’s ‘Bharat Kumar,’ has passed away at the age of 87. The legendary actor breathed his last at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital due to heart-related complications, with secondary cause of death listed as “decompensated liver cirrhosis,” according to the hospital’s medical certificate.

Born Harikrishan Giri Goswami in present-day Pakistan, Manoj Kumar carved a niche for himself in Hindi cinema with his patriotic films, including iconic classics like Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), and Purab Aur Paschim (1970). His films not only entertained but also instilled a sense of national pride among audiences.

Kumar’s contribution to Indian cinema earned him the prestigious Padma Shri in 1992, followed by the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015. Apart from acting, he ventured into filmmaking, with films like Upkar and Kranti showcasing his directorial prowess.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over his demise, sharing old photographs of the actor on social media. “Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema, remembered for his patriotic zeal. His works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti,” wrote the PM.

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar, who was often referred to by Manoj Kumar as his ‘natural successor,’ paid tribute on social media, stating, “I grew up learning from him that there’s no emotion like love and pride for our country. Such a fine person, and one of the biggest assets of our fraternity. RIP Manoj Sir. Om Shanti.”

Manoj Kumar’s legacy as an actor and filmmaker will continue to inspire future generations, as his films remain timeless symbols of patriotism and resilience.
