4.0 Magnitude Earthquake Jolts Delhi-NCR, Strong Tremors Felt Across Region

New Delhi, February 17, 2025: A 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck Delhi-NCR early on Monday morning, sending strong tremors across the region and causing panic among residents. The epicenter of the earthquake was located near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan, South Delhi, at a depth of 5 kilometers, as confirmed by the National Centre for Seismology.

The earthquake hit at 5:36 am, accompanied by a loud rumbling sound that was felt by residents across the national capital and its surrounding areas. The tremors lasted for only a few seconds but were intense enough to prompt many people to rush out of their homes in panic. Social media was flooded with videos showing people standing outside their homes, and fans shaking during the quake. Fortunately, no reports of damage or casualties have emerged so far.

In response to the event, the Delhi Police and the Delhi Fire Service confirmed that they had not received any distress calls related to the earthquake. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have urged residents to remain calm and stay alert for potential aftershocks.

Seismic Zone IV

Delhi-NCR lies within Seismic Zone IV, which indicates that the region is vulnerable to moderate to strong earthquakes. The Dhaula Kuan area, where the epicenter was located, has experienced low-magnitude quakes in the past, including a 3.3 magnitude earthquake in 2015.

Political Leaders Respond

Several political leaders took to social media to express their concern for the safety of Delhi residents. BJP leader Tajinder Singh Bagga posted, "Earthquake?", while Congress leader Alka Lamba shared a similar message. Caretaker Delhi Chief Minister Atishi also prayed for the safety of all residents, saying, "A strong earthquake just hit Delhi. I pray to God that everyone is safe." AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal echoed her sentiments, saying, "I pray for the safety of everyone."

The Delhi Police assured the public, stating, "We hope you all are safe, Delhi! For any emergency help, dial 112."

Precautions and Warnings

Despite the earthquake's moderate magnitude, the strong tremors left many residents shaken, underlining the importance of staying alert in earthquake-prone areas. Authorities have emphasized following safety protocols and staying vigilant for any aftershocks that may follow.

The National Centre for Seismology will continue to monitor the situation, and the local authorities have assured that they are prepared to address any further developments.
