Thane’s Garbage Crisis Escalates Amid Recurring Dump Fires

Thane, India: The recurring fires at garbage dumping sites in Daighar, Diva, and Bhandarli have sparked serious health concerns among residents. While civic officials blame rising temperatures, locals suspect arson and have taken the matter to the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

The high plastic content in the waste is worsening the situation, releasing toxic fumes that cause eye irritation, respiratory issues, and nausea. The recent fire at Bhandarli dumping ground in Dombivli, under the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), led to massive smoke plumes, affecting 14 surrounding villages.

Residents have long protested against illegal dumping, claiming it has worsened their living conditions. Environmentalists have pointed out the lack of a designated landfill, leading to indiscriminate waste disposal at multiple locations, including Kalwa, Kolshet, Anjur, and Kasheli.

While TMC officials deny allegations of deliberate fires and illegal dumping, activists have demanded urgent intervention from NGT to resolve the crisis and ensure scientific waste management.
