Amritsar Airport Among 21 Shut Amid Operation Sindoor Fallout

Amritsar, Punjab | May 8, 2025 – In the wake of Operation Sindoor, a high-intensity military response by the Indian Armed Forces targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), airports across North and North-Western India, including Amritsar Airport, have been completely shut until further notice.

According to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP-2) Sirivennela, a total of 21 airports have suspended all flight operations following directives from the central government, with the suspension expected to remain in place until 5:29 AM IST on May 10.“We received information that all flights need to be cancelled and the airport has to be shut down. The whole airport is shut until further notice,” Sirivennela confirmed while speaking to news agency ANI.

Airlines have been quick to respond. SpiceJet has announced the suspension of services to and from Leh, Srinagar, Jammu, Amritsar, Kandla, and Dharamshala, while IndiGo has halted flights in 11 cities, including major hubs such as Chandigarh, Jodhpur, and Rajkot.

The airspace restrictions come in the aftermath of India’s overnight airstrikes on nine high-value targets in PoK, a retaliatory step following the Pahalgam terror attack that left several security personnel dead. The central government has since raised the security alert level across several northern states.

The Delhi Airport Authority has also issued an advisory urging passengers to check their flight status and coordinate with airlines before heading to the airport.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation is closely monitoring the situation, and further decisions are expected based on the evolving security landscape. Passengers are advised to follow airline advisories and government updates through official channels.
