Battle Over AI & Copyright: DNPA, Media Giants Join ANI's Lawsuit Against OpenAI

Delhi, India: Prominent Indian media organizations HT Digital Streams, IE Online Media Services (Express Group), NDTV Convergence, and the Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) have filed an intervention in ANI's copyright lawsuit against OpenAI. Submitted ahead of the next Delhi High Court hearing, the application stresses that the case will shape how news content is shared and monetized.

The intervention argues that OpenAI and other tech giants use copyrighted content without proper authorization or licensing agreements, affecting the livelihoods of journalists and the Indian news ecosystem. It highlights that OpenAI has licensing deals with major international publishers, proving the need for permissions when training AI models.

The DNPA voiced concerns over Big Tech platforms monetizing news content without compensating publishers and maintaining control over audience reach via search engines. The Federation of Indian Publishers has also sought to join the case, recognizing its far-reaching implications across industries.

OpenAI countered the lawsuit by challenging Indian jurisdiction, citing that the contested data is not processed or stored in India. This case is among global lawsuits accusing AI companies of exploiting copyrighted content without fair remuneration, threatening revenue streams for news creators.

The Delhi High Court has appointed academic Arul George Scaria and lawyer Adarsh Ramanajun as amici curiae to assist in this landmark matter, with worldwide implications for AI, copyright law, and content creators.
