BMC Cancels 13-Hour Water Cut Scheduled for May 28 Amid Rain Forecast; South & Central Mumbai Still to Face 24-Hour Disruption

Mumbai: In a significant relief for lakhs of Mumbaikars, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has cancelled the 13-hour water cut that was scheduled for Wednesday, May 28, owing to unfavourable weather conditions and rain forecasts. The civic body made the announcement through its official social media platforms on Tuesday evening.
The now-postponed water cut was originally planned from 9:45 AM to 10:45 PM on May 28 to facilitate maintenance and the commissioning of a new pressure surge control tank at Phase 1 of the Panjrapur water supply station. This infrastructure upgrade was aimed at enhancing water pressure regulation and improving supply efficiency across Mumbai and adjoining areas.
However, with unseasonal rain affecting several parts of the city and more showers predicted, BMC officials decided to defer the work to a later date, to avoid potential complications in execution and minimize inconvenience to residents.
With this decision, residents of Mumbai’s city divisions and parts of the eastern suburbs, along with regions like Thane and the Bhiwandi-Nizampur Municipal Corporation area, which are dependent on the Panjrapur supply network, will continue to receive water as per their regular schedule.
While the Panjrapur-related cut has been called off, the planned 24-hour water shutdown in parts of South and Central Mumbai will go ahead as scheduled, the BMC confirmed. This outage is part of another critical infrastructure upgrade in the ‘E’ ward, covering areas like Byculla and Nagpada.
The shutdown will be in effect from 10:00 AM on May 28 to 10:00 AM on May 29, affecting water supply to Colaba, Fort, Mohammad Ali Road, Dongri, Byculla, Nagpada, and surrounding localities.
This project involves the decommissioning of an old 1200 mm diameter water pipeline at Navnagar and Dockyard Road, and its replacement with a new one of the same dimensions. Additionally, a 900 mm valve in Compartment 1 of the Bhandarwada Reservoir will be replaced to improve water control and flow efficiency.
BMC’s Appeal to Citizens
The BMC has urged residents in the affected zones to store adequate water in advance and cooperate with civic workers as the upgrades are essential for long-term improvements in the city's water infrastructure. The civic body is also expected to release updated schedules for the postponed Panjrapur work once weather conditions stabilize.
