BMC Rejects Faulty Concrete, Mandates Strict Slump Tests for Mumbai Roads

Mumbai, India: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has rejected a faulty batch of concrete after slump tests revealed excessive fluidity, which could compromise road durability. Notices have been issued to contractors and the Quality Control Agency (QCA), demanding explanations and corrective measures.

During an inspection at Nitu Mandke Marg in Mankhurd-Agrawadi village and Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati Marg in Chembur, Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijeet Bangar ordered the rejection of a substandard concrete batch and directed contractors to prepare three mix designs based on transportation time. Experts from IIT Bombay emphasized the importance of adjusting the mix based on delivery time, which can vary between 30 to 90 minutes.

Moving forward, mandatory slump tests will be conducted at both Ready-Mix Concrete (RMC) plants and work sites. Bangar also reviewed a pre-cast concrete road at the Godrej complex in Vikhroli with IIT professors to assess its feasibility for municipal use.
