Mumbai’s Railway Upgrade: Elevated Decks to Ease Commuter Congestion

Mumbai: Mumbai’s railway stations are set for a major upgrade, with 17 key suburban stations getting elevated decks above platforms to tackle overcrowding. The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) is leading this initiative under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-3A), with completion expected between 2025 and 2027.
Since horizontal expansion is not possible due to space constraints, vertical expansion is the only solution. These deck-level spaces will be interconnected with foot overbridges (FOBs), escalators, and elevators, ensuring smoother passenger movement while relocating commercial stalls and amenities above the platform level.
