Toll Troubles: Pollution Persists Despite Exemptions at Mumbai Nakas

Mumbai: Despite the toll exemption for private four-wheelers since October 2024, air pollution at Mumbai’s toll nakas remains a growing concern, as highlighted by the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). Traffic congestion at these toll nakas—Mankhurd, Airoli, Mulund East, Mulund West, and Dahisar—continues unabated, contributing to vehicle emissions, which account for 18–20% of Mumbai’s air pollution, according to MPCB studies.

MPCB Member Secretary Avinash Dhakane emphasized the need for seamless traffic flow, urging the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to address the issue. “Despite the exemption, traffic bottlenecks remain, which adds to vehicle emissions and pollution. The existing structure of toll nakas is a major hurdle in resolving the problem,” Dhakane explained.

Approximately 3.5 lakh vehicles pass through these toll nakas daily, with 2.8 lakh being private four-wheelers. However, no significant improvements have been observed post-toll exemption, underscoring the urgency of implementing traffic management solutions.
