Chennai Rains: IMD Warns of Heavy Rainfall in Tamil Nadu, School Holiday Update

Chennai and several districts in Tamil Nadu are bracing for heavy rainfall as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert due to a low-pressure system forming over the southwest Bay of Bengal. This weather pattern is expected to bring substantial rain to the region until November 16, 2024.

Over the past few days, Chennai has witnessed significant rainfall, and the IMD has forecasted that the city and surrounding areas will continue to experience heavy rain on Thursday and Friday. While the city is expected to see moderate rainfall throughout Thursday, some isolated areas may experience heavy downpours.
The IMD has raised an alert for 23 districts in Tamil Nadu, including Puducherry, Cuddalore, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and other southern and central regions. Additionally, districts like Kallakuruchi, Tiruvannamalai, Mayiladuthurai, and Madurai are also on the list for potential heavy rainfall. This weather warning is due to the low-pressure system affecting coastal areas and is expected to bring ongoing showers throughout the next few days.

Despite the ongoing heavy rains and the IMD’s rainfall warning, Chennai schools and educational institutions will remain open. There will be no school holiday declared for today, Thursday, November 14. Schools are expected to operate as usual unless there is a sudden change in weather conditions or local government advisories.

On Thursday, the weather in Chennai is expected to be partly cloudy, with a minimum temperature of 24°C and a maximum of 30°C. Though the city has already witnessed significant rainfall, moderate showers are predicted to continue throughout the day. With the weather system moving closer to Tamil Nadu’s coast, residents can expect a sustained period of rain over the next few days.

As the low-pressure system intensifies and moves closer to the coastal areas, the IMD expects heavy rain to persist, particularly in the southern and central parts of Tamil Nadu. The rain is forecast to impact both urban and rural areas, potentially causing disruptions in transportation and daily activities. Coastal districts, including Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam, are also likely to experience significant rainfall. Local authorities have been advised to remain vigilant in managing waterlogging and potential flood risks.

Residents of Chennai and Tamil Nadu are urged to stay informed about the weather developments over the coming days. While schools will remain open today, authorities continue to monitor the situation as the low-pressure system brings heavy rains to the region. As the weather system is expected to last until November 16, it's essential to stay prepared for further downpours, especially in areas identified by the IMD for heavy rainfall.
