Christmas Week Disruptions: Western and Central Railway Train Services Hit by Major Infrastructure Work

Mumbai: Western Railway and Central Railway to Conduct Blocks Affecting Train Services During Christmas Weekend
Mumbai commuters, brace for disruptions! Western Railway (WR) and Central Railway (CR) have announced substantial blocks to carry out critical infrastructure work during the Christmas weekend, affecting suburban and outstation train services.
Western Railway: Iconic Bandra Bridge to Be Dismantled
WR will dismantle the oldest screw-pile bridge in India at Bandra over the Mithi River, built in 1888. The work involves replacing its aged screw-pile foundations with a raft foundation to prevent track sinkage. The bridge, known as Bridge 20, is the last screw-pile bridge under Indian Railways.
-
Two blocks of 9.5 hours each are planned during Christmas weekend.
-
Suburban train services between Andheri and Dadar will face cancellations.
-
Outstation train operations will experience restrictions, with details under finalization.
WR plans to lift speed restrictions gradually post-completion, aiming to increase train speeds on the bridge by May 2025.
Central Railway: Girder Launch for Multiple Bridges
CR has scheduled an integrated block on December 21-23 to launch girders for:
-
The third Patri Pul at Kalyan,
-
Ambernath road bridge,
-
Footbridges at Ulhasnagar and Neral.
-
Integrated special traffic and power blocks will affect the UP and Down slow and fast lines, including the 5th and 6th lines, on the CSMT-Kalyan and Kalyan-Karjat sections.
These essential upgrades are part of safety and speed enhancement measures across Mumbai’s railway network. Commuters are advised to check schedules and plan their travel accordingly.
