Drunk Groom Puts Wedding Garland Around Friend’s Neck, Bride Cancels Marriage in Bareilly

Bareilly, February 24: A bizarre and shocking incident unfolded during a wedding ceremony in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly, when a groom, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, mistakenly put the wedding garland around his friend’s neck instead of the bride’s. Furious over the embarrassing act, the bride refused to marry the groom and canceled the wedding. The incident took place on the night of Saturday, February 22, in the Kyoldiya area, under the jurisdiction of the Kyoldiya Police Station.

According to reports, the wedding procession had traveled from Barkheda in Pilibhit to Bareilly for the ceremony. The groom, in an intoxicated state, failed to carry out the traditional Varmala (garland exchange) ceremony properly. After the bride placed the garland around his neck, the groom, in a drunken stupor, placed it instead on his friend’s neck. This led to an uproar, with the bride visibly upset by the situation.

Despite attempts by her family members to convince her to proceed with the marriage, the bride remained firm in her decision to cancel the wedding. She not only rejected the groom but also sent the entire wedding procession back, signaling the end of the ceremony.

Bride's Complaint and Police Action

Following the incident, the bride’s father filed a formal complaint against the groom and his family. A case has been registered for dowry harassment and public humiliation. In response to the complaint, local police took immediate action and fined the groom and four other family members. A total of five people, including the groom, his father, and three other relatives, were issued fines.

A video showing the police confronting the groom and his father has since gone viral on social media, with the police questioning the duo about the incident. In the footage, an officer is seen asking them whether they had eaten or not, further indicating the chaotic nature of the situation.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the matter, and preventive actions have been taken. Police have assured that they will look into all aspects of the case as it progresses.
