Elphinstone Bridge Closure Delayed, Now Set for April 15

Mumbai, April 11:The much-anticipated closure of the historic Elphinstone Bridge—also known as Prabhadevi Bridge—has been officially deferred and is now slated for April 15, 2025. Originally scheduled to close on April 10, the Mumbai Traffic Police held back the shutdown after receiving a flood of suggestions and objections from citizens. The final decision will be taken after reviewing all feedback by April 13.

Built in 1913 during the British era, the 125-year-old stone bridge stands as a key connector between Parel and Prabhadevi. Its closure is a part of the city’s transformative infrastructure development, including the Worli-Sewree elevated corridor and the ambitious Atal Setu project, which will eventually link to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

The shutdown is expected to last two years, during which a modern double-decker bridge will replace the existing structure. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is spearheading the redevelopment as part of efforts to improve traffic flow and connectivity in the city.

Traffic Diversions and Increased Congestion

Once the bridge is closed, significant diversions will be in place. Traffic from key areas like Prabhadevi, Worli, Lower Parel, and Mahalaxmi will be redirected to the already-busy Tilak Bridge in Dadar. This is likely to increase traffic pressure across Dadar West and surrounding zones, with estimated commute times rising by up to 30 minutes.

The two main alternative routes—Tilak Bridge and Currey Road Bridge—are expected to bear the brunt of redirected traffic. Authorities have warned of severe congestion in areas such as Ranade Road, Gokhale Road, and NC Kelkar Marg.

Impact on Public Transport

Public transportation is also set to be affected. Buses from the Lower Parel ST Depot, which previously used the Elphinstone Bridge to access Dadar, will now need to take longer detours. This is expected to reduce operational efficiency and extend commute times for passengers.

Suggested Alternative Routes

To help alleviate traffic woes, authorities have recommended the following diversions:

  • From Parel TT Junction: Use Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Road via Krishna Nagar Junction and Bharat Mata Junction.

  • From Khodadad Circle to Tilak Bridge: Turn right and proceed via Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Road.

  • Currey Road Bridge:

    • One-way traffic from 7 AM to 3 PM

    • Reverse one-way from 3 PM to 8 PM

    • Two-way traffic from 10 PM to 7 AM

Citizens are urged to stay informed, plan travel in advance, and cooperate with the authorities to minimize disruption during this critical transition phase.
