Former Home Minister Anil Deshmukh Affirms Suicide Conclusion in Rajput Case

Mumbai, March 23, 2025 – Former Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh has welcomed the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) closure report in the case of actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, reaffirming the Mumbai police’s conclusion that it was a suicide. The announcement follows the CBI’s official closure of the case, bringing an end to nearly five years of speculation, investigations, and controversies.
Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his Mumbai residence on June 14, 2020. Initially, the Mumbai police ruled the case as a suicide, but allegations of murder led to a political storm and calls for a deeper investigation. As a result, the case was transferred to the CBI after Rajput’s father filed a complaint, alleging foul play in his son’s death.
In response to the closure report, Anil Deshmukh, who served as the state’s Home Minister at the time of the incident, stated, “As the Home Minister, I consistently maintained that it was a suicide. Unfortunately, opposition leaders politicized the case during the Bihar elections, which turned the matter into a media spectacle. The Mumbai police’s investigation had already concluded it was a suicide, and the CBI’s report confirms that.”
Deshmukh also expressed his discontent over the unjust scrutiny faced by the Mumbai police, pointing out that despite their professional investigation, they were subject to undue criticism. He praised the Mumbai police’s dedication to ensuring a thorough investigation and affirmed that the CBI’s closure report validated the original findings.
The closure of the case marks a significant chapter in the long-standing saga surrounding Rajput’s tragic death. While many supporters of the actor continue to demand justice, the CBI’s report has officially closed the case, bringing a sense of closure to the official investigation.
As the investigation reaches its end, Deshmukh’s comments have sparked a renewed conversation on the political interference and media frenzy that had surrounded the case from the beginning.
