Goa Tourism Minister Slams Paid Influencers: Claims 'False Perceptions' on Social Media"

Goa: Goa's Tourism Minister, Rohan Khaunte, recently lashed out at social media influencers, accusing them of defaming the state with “false” portrayals of declining tourist footfall. In a press conference held on Thursday, Khaunte asserted that these influencers, allegedly paid as part of a larger agenda, were misleading the public by spreading the narrative that tourism was on the decline in the coastal paradise.

Contradicting these claims, Khaunte highlighted the record high occupancy rates in both high-end and budget hotels, with five- and four-star properties near full occupancy. According to him, domestic tourist arrivals have exceeded expectations compared to last year, with 2025 anticipated to be even better. “Goa’s beauty cannot be compared with Thailand; we don’t want to experience a ‘Thailand’ here,” he emphasized.

The Minister also addressed the behavior of some influencers who reportedly demand free meals or stays in exchange for boosting particular perceptions about the state. He criticized these actions, urging local influencers to showcase the “real picture” of Goa. He vowed to take action against anyone who contributed to damaging the state’s reputation.

Khaunte further revealed that a detailed tourism plan was in the works, intending to share exact tourist arrival figures and expose influencers responsible for spreading misleading information. He also mentioned that while there were some infrastructure issues, such as taxi services and hotel prices, these were being actively addressed by the government.

The state is working to ensure that the true spirit of Goa is maintained amidst these challenges, aiming to promote positive narratives while responding to tourist grievances constructively.
