Google Cracks Down on Fake Reviews: A Move to Clean Up Online Reputation (UK)

United Kingdom: In an effort to address the growing concern of fraudulent online reviews, Google has promised tougher action following a U.K. regulator's probe into deceptive feedback. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) revealed that Google will now enforce stricter measures to detect and remove fake reviews, ensuring a more reliable experience for consumers.

From now on, Google will delete reviews from individuals who consistently post fake or misleading comments—whether positive or negative—about businesses in the U.K. Repeat offenders will be banned from submitting new reviews. Additionally, businesses caught manipulating their ratings through fake reviews will face penalties, including removal of reviews older than six months and restrictions on new review submissions.

To increase transparency, Google will also allow consumers to report suspicious reviews, particularly those involving rewards or payments for positive feedback.

This initiative comes after an investigation prompted by the growing trend of fake reviews, amplified by the pandemic-driven online shopping boom. Google says it is committed to fighting fraud through its ongoing efforts with regulators worldwide, blocking millions of fraudulent reviews each year.

While this new crackdown signals a major step toward protecting online consumers, a separate investigation into Amazon’s role in this issue continues.

This move is part of Google's broader strategy to ensure confidence in reviews, providing consumers with trusted feedback and a fair digital marketplace.
