Gridlock in Andheri: Bandra-Versova Sea Link Work Escalates Traffic Woes

Versova & Andheri West, Mumbai: The already bustling areas of Versova and Four Bungalows in Andheri West are facing intensified traffic chaos as work on the Bandra-Versova Sea Link (BVSL) picks up pace. This comes after the Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) recently granted critical permissions, accelerating progress on the Rs 18,120-crore project.
Barricades have been installed along Juhu-Versova Link Road, where the geotechnical work for the sea link's connector towards Versova has commenced. Residents, already struggling with traffic caused by ongoing concreting work in Seven Bungalows and Four Bungalows, are bracing for further gridlock once full-scale construction begins.
MSRDC officials assured that they are working to minimize inconvenience for motorists, but the current measures have done little to assuage local concerns.
Key Project Updates
-
Cost Escalation: Originally sanctioned at Rs 11,332 crore in 2018, the project cost rose to Rs 18,120 crore, factoring in site shifts, beautification, and lighting.
-
Progress: Civil work is 25% complete, with significant advancements expected soon.
-
Connector Plans: The Juhu connector will now extend to the Western Express Highway, complemented by cable-stayed bridges to ease congestion and reduce environmental impacts.
Benefits Upon Completion
The BVSL will slash travel time between Bandra and Versova to just 15–20 minutes, offering numerous benefits, including lower vehicle maintenance costs, reduced environmental impact, and improved mental peace for drivers. It is also anticipated to enhance land values and create job opportunities.
While the project promises long-term relief, Versova locals must contend with immediate discomfort and disrupted commutes.
