In Dhaka, the residence of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Hasina's husband was set on fire

Dhaka, 06 February :  In the capital of Bangladesh, late in the evening until the night, there was widespread vandalism at the residence of the country's founding father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and the residence of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's husband in Dhanmondi-32. The crowd not only vandalized the property but also set it on fire. During this time, the interim government remained a mere spectator. Sheikh Hasina has been residing in India since August of last year.

According to a report from The Daily Star, the entire incident took place during Sheikh Hasina's online address. Thousands of protesters gathered at Dhanmondi-32 and engaged in heavy vandalism. The protesters claimed that the residence was a center of fascism and demanded its demolition. This entire campaign was called the "Bulldozer March."

Sheikh Hasina's address was supposed to start at 9 PM, but even before that, thousands of protesters stormed Bangabandhu’s residence. They used shovels and hammers to damage the property. Witnesses reported that a mural of Bangabandhu Mujib was destroyed during the incident. Around 9:30 PM, some people set the building on fire. A crane and an excavator arrived before midnight, and after about two and a half hours, the incident was reported. By then, parts of the residence had been demolished.

According to some social media posts, Sheikh Hasina has been allegedly conducting anti-Bangladesh activities from Delhi, and this event is said to be a response to that. Protesters raised slogans during the event, and the word "Delhi" was mentioned in the chants. They also demanded that the Awami League be barred from participating in any future elections in Bangladesh. During the entire chaos, the police remained passive, and no fire department personnel arrived at the scene until midnight. Some army personnel did arrive around 9:30 PM but left soon after.

The interim government's home advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Police Inspector General Baharul Alam, Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner SM Sajjat Ali, and Additional Commissioner SN Nazrul Islam refused to comment on the incident. The "Bulldozer March" was called by the "Basherkela" Facebook group, People's Activists Coalition (PAC) spokesperson Ratul Mohammad, July Revolutionary Alliance, Students Against Discrimination coordinator Hasnat Abdullah, and Paris-based blogger Pinaki Bhattacharya, among others on social media. According to reports, the protesters also set fire to Sheikh Hasina's late husband's residence, Sudha Sadan, located in Dhanmondi, where nuclear scientist MA Wazed Mia once lived. Fire department official Rakibul Hasan confirmed the incident, stating that they received reports of a fire at Dhanmondi-32.
