Independent Candidate from Navi Mumbai Arrested for Attempt to Murder in Polls

Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra – In a shocking development ahead of the Maharashtra state assembly elections, an independent candidate contesting from the Airoli constituency has been booked for attempted murder after a violent altercation at a voter guidance booth in Koparkhairane.
The accused, who is running as an independent candidate, allegedly attacked the son of a former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporator on Tuesday afternoon. According to police reports, the incident occurred when the two individuals got into a heated argument at the voter assistance booth, which was set up to help locals with election-related queries.
Eyewitnesses claim that the altercation quickly escalated, with the candidate physically assaulting the BJP leader’s son. The assault reportedly involved the candidate attempting to strike the victim with a heavy object, leading to injuries that required immediate medical attention. The victim was later admitted to a nearby hospital, where his condition is said to be stable.
The incident has raised concerns over the safety and conduct of political figures during the election campaign. While the independent candidate has denied the charges, claiming the altercation was a result of provocation, the BJP has condemned the assault, calling it a "blatant act of violence" and demanding that the law take its course.
As the investigation continues, police have promised swift action, and the accused will likely face legal proceedings. The Koparkhairane police are expected to take further statements from witnesses and examine CCTV footage from the area to build a stronger case. The Maharashtra state assembly elections are scheduled to take place next month, with multiple constituencies across the state gearing up for a fierce contest between various political parties.
