Karnataka Liquor Stores to Shut Down on November 20 Over Corruption Allegations

Karnataka’s liquor stores will go on a statewide shutdown on November 20 to protest alleged corruption within the state’s Excise Department. Over 10,800 licensed establishments, led by the Karnataka Wine Merchants Federation (KWMF), are participating in the bandh, which aims to highlight issues of rampant corruption, unfair competition, and unsustainable business practices due to the government’s licensing policies.
Govindaraj Hegde, General Secretary of KWMF, criticized the government for issuing new licenses without regard for existing rules, creating intense competition that established businesses, contributing ₹38,000 crore annually, are struggling to survive. He claimed that many dealers are unable to cope with the financial strain caused by the unchecked expansion of liquor shops.
This move comes as part of ongoing protests from the wine merchants who have long demanded reforms in the Excise Department and a review of the state’s licensing practices. With significant participation expected from industry players, the bandh is seen as a call for more sustainable business policies and a fairer competitive environment.
