Maharashtra Mandates High Security Plates for Pre-2019 Vehicles

Maharashtra, Mumbai: Maharashtra's Transport Department has set a deadline for over 20 million vehicle owners to install High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on their vehicles, following a new directive issued on December 4. The mandate affects all vehicles registered before April 2019, requiring them to display these advanced registration plates by March 31, 2025.
Manufactured from aluminum alloy, HSRPs include a retro-reflective film, a unique serial number, an Ashok Chakra hologram, and a 10-digit tamper-proof laser-embossed number. The initiative, aimed at reducing vehicle theft and improving vehicle identification, was initially implemented for new vehicles in April 2019.
Installation costs are ₹450 for two-wheelers and tractors, ₹500 for three-wheelers, and ₹745 for four-wheelers. Three agencies—Rosmerta Safety Systems, Real Mazon India, and FTA HSRP Solutions—have been appointed to handle the installation process across the state.
Failure to comply by the deadline will result in penalties under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
