Monsoon Revival Likely on June 13: IMD Issues Alerts for Mumbai, Parts of Maharashtra

Mumbai, June 10: After a sluggish start to the monsoon season despite its early onset on May 26, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a significant revival of monsoon activity across Mumbai and several parts of Maharashtra from June 13 onwards. The fresh spell of rain is expected to bring much-needed respite from the heat and humidity that has persisted over the past two weeks.

While scattered showers have been recorded in the city since the onset, the monsoon has remained largely inactive, causing concern among residents and authorities. IMD scientist Sushma Nair explained, “Monsoon is not a continuous phenomenon. It includes active and dormant phases. The current lull is one such dormant phase.”

According to IMD's latest weather models, a strengthening trough extending from North Tamil Nadu to the South Maharashtra coast via interior Karnataka is set to trigger renewed monsoon activity. This system is expected to draw in moisture from surrounding areas, potentially leading to widespread rain across the Konkan region and interior Maharashtra.

In anticipation of the revival, the IMD has issued the following alerts:

  • Orange Alert (Heavy to very heavy rainfall): Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, and the Kolhapur Ghats region

  • Yellow Alert (Moderate rainfall): Thane, Raigad, and Pune districts

Residents in these areas are advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions, especially in low-lying and landslide-prone regions.

Mumbai’s rainfall figures reflect the dormant phase, with the Santacruz observatory recording 87.5 mm and the Colaba observatory logging 82.4 mm so far in June—well below average for this time of year.

For June 10, the IMD forecast for Mumbai includes partly cloudy skies with the possibility of one or two spells of rain or thundershowers. Daytime temperatures are expected to range between 27°C and 33°C, with high humidity levels continuing.

As the city awaits a more active monsoon phase, civic bodies have begun preparations for waterlogging and flood management in anticipation of heavier rains next week.
