Mumbai Lashed by Heavy Rains; Waterlogging and Travel Disruptions Reported Across City
IMD Upgrades Rainfall Warning to Orange Alert; Downpour to Continue Through the Week

Mumbai, July 21 – The city of Mumbai was battered by heavy rainfall on Monday, leading to significant waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and delays in public transport. South Mumbai and the Western suburbs bore the brunt of the overnight downpour, with visuals from Marine Drive, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Andheri, and Kurla showing flooded streets and commuters taking shelter from the rain.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had initially issued a yellow alert for the city, forecasting moderate to heavy showers. However, in light of intensifying conditions, the alert was upgraded to an orange alert on Monday morning, warning of more intense rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching 30–40 km/h.
Commuters across the city faced a challenging morning as local trains on the Harbour Line reported delays of up to 25 minutes, and the Andheri subway was shut down due to severe waterlogging. Several low-lying areas in central and western suburbs experienced flooding, slowing down vehicular movement during peak hours.
Air travel was also affected, with IndiGo Airlines issuing a statement urging passengers to leave early for the airport due to slow-moving traffic on rain-hit routes. “Our teams are ready to support you on the ground and are working to keep operations running as steadily as possible,” the airline assured.
According to the IMD, temperatures are expected to range between 25°C and 31°C throughout the week, with high humidity and cloudy skies. Rainfall is forecast to persist, with moderate rain and thunderstorms expected on Tuesday, followed by more intense rainfall from Wednesday onward. A fresh yellow alert has been issued for Wednesday, with the potential for heavy rain and widespread cloud cover.
By Friday, the rainfall is expected to subside slightly, though light to moderate showers will likely continue. The IMD has not issued any severe weather warnings for the weekend, but residents are advised to remain cautious as monsoon activity continues.
Advisory for Residents:
-
Carry umbrellas or raincoats when stepping out.
-
Exercise caution on waterlogged roads and slippery surfaces.
-
Check train and flight status before travel.
As Mumbai progresses deeper into the monsoon season, civic bodies and emergency services remain on high alert to respond to any critical weather-related developments. Authorities continue to urge residents to stay updated with official forecasts and advisories.
