Mumbai Watchman Sentenced to 7 Years for Attempted Rape and Murder

Mumbai, India: A sessions court has sentenced 25-year-old security guard Raja Chandradeep Sabu to seven years of imprisonment for attempting to rape and murder a woman in Andheri West in April 2017.

The incident occurred on April 20, 2017, when the woman, at home with her mother, called Sabu to get his phone number for water supply inquiries. Intoxicated at the time, he forcibly entered her house, locked the door, and attacked her. As she resisted, he stabbed her twice in the abdomen.

During the assault, the woman’s brother-in-law arrived and tried to stop Sabu, but he fled. However, with the help of other residents, he was caught and handed over to the police.

In his February 17 ruling, Additional Sessions Judge AA Kulkarni noted that the accused had inflicted grievous injuries with the intent to kill. Despite the severity of the crime, the court reduced the sentence to seven years, considering his age at the time and granting him an opportunity for reformation.
