Mumbai Traffic Police Deploy Special Squad for EV Breakdowns Amid Summer Surge

Mumbai, India: With electric vehicle (EV) breakdowns rising during the summer, the Mumbai Traffic Police has formed a four-member special squad to handle stalled EVs and ease congestion.

Why the Need for a Special Squad?

Officials report an average of 18 EV breakdowns daily, often leading to major traffic jams as stalled vehicles block roads. The newly trained officers, with support from a reputed automobile company, will provide basic repairs and assistance to get vehicles moving or direct them to the nearest garage.

How Will It Work?

  • Immediate Response: Trained officers will attempt to restart stalled EVs or move them out of traffic hotspots.

  • Coordination with Mechanics: Each car brand has designated mechanics, who will be contacted for further assistance.

  • Handling Electric Buses: For public transport, BEST mechanics will be dispatched.

  • Quick Clearance: Traffic is typically restored within 1-2 hours after a breakdown.

Ensuring Smooth Traffic Flow

Since towing vans often take time to arrive due to congestion, the priority of the Mumbai Traffic Police is to restore smooth traffic movement as quickly as possible. Officers are also trained to remove obstacles like tyre blockages while awaiting further assistance.
